HVAC Industry in America Budgets $5bn R&D Project

GTR_Coca_Cola

Stephen Yurek is the president and CEO at the Air Conditioning, Heating and Refrigeration Institute in America and he has said that the American HVAC sector is going to invest over $5 billion into research to develop refrigerants and machines over the next 10 years.

He said, “Close to $2 billion has been spent by the industry since 2009 researching energy-efficient equipment and the utilisation of low GWP-refrigerants and over the next 10 years, the HVACR industry will invest an additional $5 billion of research and development and capital expenditures to develop and commercialise low-GWP technologies.” Continue reading

Costco faced with fine after Clean Air Act Violations

GTR_Costco

Costco have been hit with a $335,000 fine and they will need to pay $2 million in remedial measures because they have not recorded R22 leaks over the last 3 years.

Costco are the second largest retailer in the US and they had previously promised to cut their emissions from refrigeration and they were planning on doing so by improving their units in more than half of their stores across the country. Continue reading

ECOPHIT technology can reduce energy consumption by 26%

GTR_Singapore

There has been a study conducted in Singapore which shows that a new type of air conditioning system could reduce energy consumption by 26%. For countries where temperatures can be unbearable, this is great news as it means units that are usually on all day and night can now be replaced for a more efficient system.

On top of this, they found that when the back end system is optimised there is a possible reduction in energy consumption by 36%. The new technology is called Chilled Ceiling Technology and the study was carried out by the Energy Research Institute at Nanyang Technological University in Singapore. Continue reading

Samsung moves further into the Air Conditioning market

Image of Samsung buildingIt is no secret that air conditioning is a lucrative market, especially in certain US states where the hot weather means that nearly all homes and businesses have some sort of air conditioning unit installed. This is why technology giant Samsung has recently acquired two new businesses in order to expand their offerings in North America with a range of air conditioning products and ‘smart home’ solutions. The Best Air Conditioning for you; Advantages and Disadvantages

Image of Air Con Unit
Air conditioning is now used in most shops and offices but do you need to have a unit in your home? The main types of air conditioning are portable single unit models or split models that are fixed to the wall. Continue reading

4 Types of Cooling Systems

Image of outdoor central AC

These days, especially in hotter countries, everyone needs air conditioning units. Air conditioning varies and you can get portable units or fit units into your home. All air conditioning units use the same elements in each system including a compressor, expansion valve, evaporator coil, condenser and a refrigerant. In this blog G T Refrigeration explains the different types of air conditioning. Continue reading

Origins of Air Conditioning

GTR_Washington

The majority of us take air conditioning for granted nowadays, but the origins of these units will surprise you. For example in America in the cooling plants, rather than using the refrigerants that we are used to today they actually used ammonia! It wasn’t until the 1920s when it was decided that a safer option would be a refrigerant of some kind. As soon as this was developed air conditioning was installed in cinemas, shopping centres and government buildings in America. Continue reading

Refrigerator Magnets – More than just your average bric-a-brac

Fridge Magnet

Every so often, something weird and wonderful comes from the air conditioning and refrigeration world, hence the air conditioned suit. This week we have heard that now refrigerator magnets may be able to cool fridges!

Everyone loves a fridge magnet and it is predicted that in the future they will be so much more than clutter for the front of your fridge. According to MIT researchers they could be used as the cooling agent.

Their theory explains that the magnons that are found in magnets rotate and is called “spins” as well as these spins, the magnons also give off heat and according to the research that was carried out that when the magnons are introduced to a magnetic field, they travel from one end to another. This means that the heat is taken with them and therefore a cooling effect occurs. Continue reading

Renewable Energy and Counterfeit Refrigerant

GTR_WindFarm

The Guardian has reported that the new environment and energy ministers for the Conservative party bring a reputation of actually opposing renewable energy. Those that have been appointed have reportedly opposed wind and solar farms and are very pro fracking.

Michael Hancock is the new energy minister and according to The Guardian he wrote and signed a letter to David Cameron stating, “I support renewable energy but we do need to do it in a way that gives us the most value for money and that does not destroy our natural environment.” He was referring to cutting the costs for onshore wind farms although this letter was dated back in 2012. Choosing an air conditioner

Fan

Summer time is here (although it may not feel like it sometimes) if you haven’t got an air conditioning unit installed in your office or house yet now is the time do to so. However, there are many makes and models all capable of doing lots of different things so how do you know where to start? Well here at G T Refrigeration we have written a breakdown for you to get you started!

First of all you need to know how they work. Once the unit is on and running the air that passes through goes through the unit and over a cold evaporator coil. Here the air is cooled and the moisture that is in the air that often causes the feeling of humidity is removed. This air is then blown back into the room making it a cooler environment for it to be in. Continue reading
