Air conditioning is now used in most shops and offices but do you need to have a unit in your home? Most people in the UK would see it as a mad idea as most of the year it’is dull, cold and rainy but when it does get to those summer months it can sometimes become unbearable in your home, especially when trying to sleep. In this blog we will help you to decide what kind of air conditioning you may need for the summer months. As explained in our previous blog, there a several different types of air conditioning units. The main types of air conditioning are portable single unit models or split models that are fixed to the wall.

Single Air Conditioning Unit; Advantages and Disadvantages

The advantages of having a single unit air conditioner are that they are cheap to run and work well to cool your home. They are very simple to install and take almost no time. They work by venting hot air through a hose, meaning you can move the unit around your home.

As with everything there are the disadvantages. With the single units you have to vent hot air through a hose meaning putting your hose through a window and leaving it open which poses a security risk. The portable units are not as effective as the split units because they get hot and end up leaking warmth back into the room. The units are also very heavy meaning it may be difficult for you to get it up stairs or move to other rooms.

Split Air Conditioning Unit; Advantages and Disadvantages

Split air conditioning units are fixed in one position so they are great if you have one room that always gets hot, and they are also a safe and secure way of cooling down your room with no need to leave any windows open. The split units make less noise and run more efficiently than the single units, and they are also a lot more powerful.

The split units are quite a bit more expensive than the portable units due to the fact they are bigger and run better. Installation of the split units can be difficult and expensive because it needs to be permanently mounted on an outside wall. It would be an idea to hire a professional to do this for you.

When buying an air conditioning unit you will need to take all these advantages and disadvantages into consideration. Do you have the money to spend on a split air conditioning unit and do you really need it? Or have you got a window that is safe enough to put a hose through for your portable unit? Overall, in the UK not many homes need the split units because it doesn’t get too hot for too long but often offices will have the split units in place.
