Energy Saving Tips

With energy companies increasing their prices yet again this winter it is important to save money where you can whilst also staying warm in your home so we have put together some tips of what can be done to save money and be more environmentally friendly. Being “green” is an overused term to the point where people think everyone is doing it so maybe it doesn’t matter if you don’t recycle that plastic bottle or switch the light off when you leave the room because everyone else is. Well it is important that we all do our bit and save money in the process.

If you have your heating unit tuned up once a year this will help it run more efficiently and therefore reduce your energy usage, saving the planet and the pennies. It is also a good idea to have your air conditioning serviced annually too for the same reasons.

In both air conditioning and heating systems it is important that your filters are clean as a clogged filter slows air flow making the heating or cooling system less efficient. The unit then struggles to satisfy the temperature demands which means the harder it is working the more it costs and the more energy is used.

If in your office you have a heating and cooling unit as one it is essential that you have a programmable thermostat. During the winter temperatures need to be warmer during the week when people are in the office but once everyone has gone home the heating can be switched off. This is the same during the summer, have the air conditioning running during the day but switch it off in the evenings to reduce costs. If the area where you are trying to change the temperature is large then you can divide the area into zones and control the area depending on what is going to be used when and what temperatures are going to be most comfortable. For your home for instance you could have the living areas warmer during the day and bedrooms warmer in the evening.

If you are looking to reduce costs in your home, in terms of heating you could drop the temperature by two or three degrees and could cut costs between 3% and 5% from your energy bill. The biggest issue is making sure that your home or office is retaining the heat that you are paying for.
