Here at GT Refrigeration we love all things air conditioning but even we think this is brilliant and bizarre all at the same time!
The Japanese have created trousers with built in air conditioning systems to keep you cool in the summer (if it ever turns up).
With the heat over the last couple of days this might not sound like such a bad thing but there are two disadvantages. The first is the noise the trousers make. They have a whirring sound as the air circulates around the legs, which is definitely not a desirable attribute to a pair of trousers!
The second is that they inflate and deflate as the air is sucked in and out of the trousers. The makers have described it as “like a Michelin man”.
The trousers have two fans built into the sides and are powered by batteries. They are built into the pockets and the trousers only come in the colour Khaki.
There is also a matching jacket. Yes you can buy a fully air conditioned outfit! All the electrical parts to the jacket can be removed for washing. Again the disadvantage to this item of clothing is the balloon effect that occurs when the air is circulated.
The creator of the products has said that these are not fashion items; this is certainly something we can agree with. However these may be a good purchase for a long train ride home from work on those ever rare sweltering days.
The Air Conditioning and Refrigeration Show was launched earlier this year and due to the response there will be another one in 2014. The dates are currently the 11th to the 13th of February and will be held in the NEC in Birmingham.
A different date has been previously announced but this coincided with another event, Mostra Convegno which is the Italian Exhibition.
Already the ACR show in 2014 is already being backed by key organisations within the industry. These include: The Institute of Refrigeration, the British Refrigeration Association, and the Federation of Environmental Trades Association, among others.
Jan Thorpe who is the event director for the show said, “It was an extremely positive result for a brand new show, and provides an excellent foundation on which to build for the next ACR Show in 2014. We are already working on exciting plans to expand the event. This includes even better networking opportunities and visitor attractions, such as cutting edge business and technical presentations, training and other high interest features.”
There were a total of 3,492 visitors and exhibitors. It proved a brilliant opportunity to view the latest developments in the industry. 30 per cent of those who visited were contractors and installers and a further 18 per cent were manufacturers. Ms Thorpe added, “The visitor analysis shows that nearly 70 per cent of visitors had either direct responsibility for purchasing decisions or influenced them. It reflects the overwhelming feedback from exhibitors that the show attracted people with serious buying power.”
Of course with the Olympics right around the corner and the British weather not getting any better there is a wonder are we going to get poured on while watching the events?
As everyone who has ever planned an event in the summer in England will know, the very likely possibility of rain needs to be considered. Not only do organisers need to make sure the entire Olympics run smoothly, they also need to make sure there are extra plans in place in case it rains. This means considering millions of spectators, 70,000 volunteers and 10,500 world class athletes.
There have been 250,000 red white a blue ponchos have been added to the stock lists inside the shops at the venues just in case. There will also be Olympic branded umbrellas for sale making sure everyone will stay dry. Although there has been no mention of how many air conditioning units are being fitted!
The Met Office has created a five person team, dedicated to predicting weather conditions while the Olympics are on. However it has been reported that it is far too early to make any accurate predictions for when the games kick off on July 27th.
The organisers of the Olympics are confident that if it does rain it won’t affect any plans. Debbie Jevans who is the director of sport for the LOCOG has said, “By definition, being British you have no choice but to prepare for the weather.
“Clearly if you gave me the choice of rain or no rain, you’d rather have no rain and that’s for the spectators as much as anything else.
“We’ve known from day one what we looked across the sports that they will happen whether it is raining or not, and so the plans have always included that.”
Willie Haughey, started a refrigeration company with his wife, Susan back in 1985. They started off with just four employees and now they have 11,000 and they are global giants. He has now found out that he is being knighted for business and philanthropy services.
He built City Refrigeration Holdings into a hugely successful business and he has also started the City Charitable Trust. Since he has set up the Charity it has donated more than £5 million most of which has been donated to local charities.
Mr Haughey said, 2Obviously I feel very honoured but I also feel privileged, humbled and overwhelmed, I was absolutely thrilled to receive the letter. It’s amazing, you never expect for a minute it could happen to you and when it does it’s a shock.”
Mr Haughey was born in Glasgow and moved the headquarters of his company to where his childhood home once was.
Hopefully the weather will pick up soon and we can all enjoy the weather and turn our air conditioning back on. Remember to have you unit checked to ensure it is working properly.
As we see the hot temperatures of the last week and a half slowly disappearing over the weekend, we have to wonder, was that our summer and is over?
Here in Britain our heat waves never last very long and last week was no exception. The weather is predicted to go back to typical May/June weather at the weekend. Forecaster Charlie Powell is saying June will carry on being fairly predictable. The weather is going to be just as expected over the next month, sunny spells interspersed with rainy spells.
If there is going to be any dramatic weather changes over the summer this year then the forecasting team will know about it well in advance and as of yet there are no signs of an extraordinary summer.
The reason for us never having exceptionally warm weather or exceptionally wet weather during the summer months is due to our position on the globe and it just isn’t possible. Although, Cumbria is situated in an area which means it is subject to winds coming from three different directions which all bring along different types of weather.
There is no way of accurately predicting what the weather will be like this summer as anything after a five day prediction isn’t reliable, although all the signs look like we are in for a traditional English summer.
Last year the hottest day of the year came in October when the surprisingly warm spell came and many dubbed it an Indian summer. As we can never be sure when the hot weather will strike us here in Britain, it is always best to ensure your air conditioning unit is working all year round. This will not only prolong the life of it but also its effectiveness, which can be vital on those muggy days in the office.
In Qatar there is an estimated £30 billion that is expected to be spent on building stadiums that have air conditioning before the World Cup is held there in 2022.
A physiotherapist to the GB table tennis team, Craig Fowlie, has just returned from Qatar and has said how hard it could be for all kinds of sports teams to cope in the unbearable heat. He said, “It was 40 degrees in the morning and got hotter during the day, you could not play football in that heat.”
Craig has worked with Hurricanes; a New Zealand Rugby Union team, so he already knows what affects the heat has on players.
He carried on saying, “It might be ok if the stadiums are fitted with air conditioning but what about when the players want to train in between matches?
“Will they be able to train in the stadiums too, with other games scheduled?
“There is not much air out there and at times it is difficult to breath but I am sure they can make it work.”
Especially on days like today, we know the importance of having air conditioning at work although most of us won’t be running around outside in 40 degree heat!
Toshiba Air Conditioning is expanding its network within the UK by taking on DYSK Air Conditioning as the complete Toshiba Distributor.
They are based in Harpenden Herts and they will be offering Toshiba’s complete range of products. This is everything from splits to pump ranges.
The commercial director at Toshiba Air Conditioning, David Dunn has said, “DYSK is a well known and respected distributor in the market, and is a welcome addition to Toshiba’s growing network.
“It is a further important step in advancing our ambitions to build on the substantial growth achieved over the last two years and make Toshiba available to a wider marketplace.
“As a result of significant growth in our sakes over the past two years and anticipated growth this year, we have been able to absorb the increases in material and development costs that our competitors have passed on to customers.”
The products where they have managed to stabilise the costs are on their VRF systems, Digital Inverter, Super Digital Inverter and Estia ranges plus accessories.
Mr Dunn carried on to say, “It is obviously good news for our growing customer base, and has been welcomed enthusiastically by our distributors. With major new product launches set for this year, an expanded UK supply network, and now assurance of highly competitive prices, the elements are in place for a great year for the company.
Also coming up this year, Toshiba have a new online ordering system for spare parts for launch later on in 2012.
Mr Dunn said, “With innovative new products and services lined up for 2012, and a significantly enlarged UK distributor network, Toshiba Air Conditioning is looking forward to a third year of sustained growth.”
It is great to hear that even in the economic down turn the air conditioning industry is still experiencing growth.
This week Melbourne was host to the Air Conditioning, Refrigeration and Building Services Exhibition. Companies such as Fujitsu, Daikin, Mitsubishi Electric and LG all had new products ranges to show off and they all had one thing in common, the style. All the air conditioning units had been transformed from the traditionally white box, to sleek curves in a range of colours.
Daikin and Fujitsu have both decided on a more streamlined design, with their units having curves and all unnecessary buttons, vents and lights being removed for a minimal design and a smoother effect.
Mitsubishi Electric and LG opted for a change in colour to give consumers more choice and be able to blend the units to the decor of their homes.
Mitsubishi Electric offers the air conditioning units in black and silver. Raja Gounder, the company’s national project manager said “If you have dark walls, the black unit doesn’t stick out as much as a traditional white air conditioner.
“It has a new modern look for modern houses.
“The silver model has also been designed to fit into rooms such as the kitchen, where there are lots of stainless steel appliances.”
LG are offering a similar design for the same reasons with a mirror finish air conditioning unit.
Hopefully this new style of air conditioning units will encourage more and more people to have them in their homes and offices. This will enable better conditions during those hotter months of the year.
Last month we launched a follow and retweet competition on our twitter account @GTRefrigeration. So far we have had an amazing amount of entries but we still need more!
The competition ends just in time for you to receive the mini fridge and stock it up with goodies before the European Championship starts. If you love football and refrigeration as much as we do, this is an opportunity not to be missed.
The competition ends on Sunday the 20th of May and the winner will be announced on Monday 21st. If this sounds like a prize for you then get to our twitter page and simply follow us and then retweet the competition.
So far we have had over 1000 entries but don’t let this put you off. The winner will be chosen at random and no matter how many times you retweet the competition you only get one place so everyone has an equal chance, so don’t feel bad if you are a late comer!
Good luck and get tweeting.
So the day is nearly over and we still have half a month’s rain to come in the next few hours. In the UK, this is expected to be the wettest day of the year with a predicted months worth of rain to fall in just 24 hours.
There have been four severe weather warnings across the UK as the high winds and heavy rain will be carried over the country for what looks like could be till the later part of tomorrow afternoon. Weather forecasters are also predicting that our April showers won’t end at the end of the month; they look set to continue into May.
The worst hit areas are expected to be in Eastern Scotland and in the South of England. Unlucky for us!
Paul Michaelwhite, a weather forecaster has said, “It’s an April washout rather than April showers as unusually deep, autumnal type Atlantic low pushes across the South.
“This is an unusually active depression for the time of year, as the Atlantic is traditionally at its quietest during mid-to-late spring.”
This is the complete opposite, however, to what is going on, on the other side of the world in New Mexico. They are experiencing the most uncomfortable temperatures. It has been reported that the student housing in Cervantes Village’s air conditioning isn’t programmed to come on till the last day April and many students have to sleep on their tiled floors just to keep cool. A lady who lives in the village has said her daughter has woken up with nose bleeds from the humidity and dry air.
The housing officials say it takes 4 weeks to switch all 900 of the air conditioning units and although the process has started, the residents need to be patient as they are not at fault for temperatures reaching 15 degrees what is the seasonal average.
