It has been announced that there have been some new qualifications released in order to help businesses prevent the legionnaire’s disease which stems from legionella bacteria.

Highfield Awarding Body for Compliance (HABC) have come up with the new qualifications and have partnered up with B & V water treatments in order to do so. The qualifications that they have put in place are for those who have air conditioning systems and an understanding of the bacteria and the disease, how to measure it and also how to stop it. Below are the new qualifications.

The first is the HABS Level 2 Award in Legionella Awareness (Cooling and Condensers). This qualification is split into two routes that cover the cooling and evaporating condensers as well as the hot and cold water systems. The qualification was put into place to help aid workers who are going to be in environments where there is a risk of the bacteria growing. It has also been designed to raise awareness around the legionella bacteria.

No matter the route you choose both will cover the health effects that come with the disease as well as what control measures need to be put in place to avoid environments in which the legionella can multiply to a level that is harmful. It also includes suggestions as to how businesses can remain in compliance with the Health and Safety Executive Approved Code of Practice.

The second qualification is the HABC Level 3 Award in Legionella Control for Responsible Persons which have been created for those that are already responsible or looking to become responsible. This qualification covers the effect that legionella has on the body as well as what would happen if an outbreak were to happen. Also covered are how legionella bacteria can be identified and how to best control the risk that is associated with the bacteria. On top of this the legislation that supports this control is also covered during the course too.

Jason Spregner is the Chief Executive at HABC and he has said, “Legionella is still a real concern to many organisations and public agencies, so it is vital that staff have the skills and expertise to deal with it.
“These qualifications will provide worked with the knowledge and expertise needed to prevent the outbreak and spread of Legionnaires disease, and provide reassurance to staff and customers alike.”
The Training and Marketing Manager at B & V Water Treatment, Sarah Pallett, also commented on the situation saying, “B & V Water Treatment is proud to have worked with HABC to develop this suite of qualifications in legionella control. It is an employer’s responsibility to ensure that all staff are suitably trained.

“Having trained, knowledgeable staff becomes particularly important when controlling the risks associated with legionella bacteria and in meeting the regulatory requirements set out in the HSE ACOP L8.
“These qualifications provide employers with the confidence they need to ensure they are effectively managing the risks associated with legionella.”
