Samsung moves further into the Air Conditioning market

Image of Samsung buildingIt is no secret that air conditioning is a lucrative market, especially in certain US states where the hot weather means that nearly all homes and businesses have some sort of air conditioning unit installed. This is why technology giant Samsung has recently acquired two new businesses in order to expand their offerings in North America with a range of air conditioning products and ‘smart home’ solutions.

Over the past few years new technology has been created which allows consumers to monitor and control aspects of their homes via mobile devices, including air conditioning and heating units. Smart home solutions are therefore becoming increasingly popular, as not only do they provide more flexibility but also the potential to save money on utility bills as homeowners are able to turn off appliances remotely.

In just one week Samsung acquired SmartThings and Quietside LLC, the former being an American platform developer which specialises in smart home Apps and the second an air conditioner distributor in the US. By purchasing both of these companies Samsung will not only be able to offer their customers smart home technology but also top-of-the-range air conditioning units to go with it. Discussing the acquisition, Sang Lee, founder of Quietside, said: “The acquisition of Quietside by Samsung provides a terrific benefit to our customers and employees.

“The rapid growth of our product categories in North America provides a great opportunity for us to scale our business rapidly to meet the needs of the market. The operational capabilities of Samsung and the strength of the Samsung brand will mean incredible opportunities for us all going forward.” Meanwhile, Samsung released a statement saying: “Because air conditioning products are a necessity in all buildings, including homes and offices, this acquisition is expected to be of help to our future smart home business.”

Tim Baxter, president of Samsung Electronics America, also commented on the acquisition, and said: “Samsung is excited to deepen our long relationship with Quietside by making this acquisition. Samsung always looks to bring innovation and new technology to our customers and we look forward to working with Sang and his team to bring that same commitment to selling HVAC products to customers across North America.”

Samsung is making great strides into the American smart home air conditioning market, and if they are successful then Europe could be their next target. In order to retain a good amount of market share it is likely that Samsung’s competitors will also start to up their games soon and invest more heavily in smart home air conditioning technology.
