Knowing when to replace your air conditioning system

As spring is here and we are well on our way to summer it is important that you know if your air conditioning unit needs to be replaced. This is to ensure that you are confident that the air is being circulated safely and that it is running efficiently. There are some signs that you can spot which will indicate when you are due a new unit or at least a service.

If you have seen an increase in your energy bills over the last few months you should compare this to other buildings around to see if this is out of the ordinary. If it is, this implies that your air conditioning unit is no longer efficient or just too old to run at the same level it had been previously. If you are purchasing a new unit you should look for one that has a SEER (seasonal energy efficiency ratio) of 14 at the minimum.

If you feel that you have to call someone out for maintenance work or repair the unit frequently this indicates that your unit is no longer reliable and is also costing you a lot of money in fixing it. In this case, it is advised that you get in contact with a professional who will be able to let you know if it is more beneficial to get a replacement unit or to carry on with the repairs.

It is important to consider the age of your unit. If it has been going for around 10 years or more it is likely that it will be beginning to slow down, and whilst you think it will last you just one more year, a quick service check might actually reveal that you are due a new one.

The purpose of the air conditioning unit isn’t just to cool the temperature but to also regulate the temperature in the room. This is done through the use of filters and ducts and if they are leaking or clogged this will reduce the efficiency. This leads to excessive dust and therefore a reduced quality of air. This can happen if you don’t have regular maintenance but it will happen over time the older your unit gets.

Another sign to look out for is if the unit is becoming noisy. These days’ units are designed to be as quiet as possible so if you are noticing a sound it is time to call an engineer.

All in all, the best way to ensure that your unit is running to the best it possible can is to have seasonal maintenance checks but it is inevitable that at some point you will need to replace the system.
