Honeywell and DuPont Receive Statement of Objection

There has been a long battle over which refrigerants should and shouldn’t be used in air conditioning systems and there has been a strong force within the industry to try and make refrigerants more environmentally friendly not only for the greater good but also to ensure that businesses adhere to the law.

However, the European Commission has recently sent a Statement of Objections to Honeywell and DuPont. The statement was sent in regards to the refrigerant R-1234yf. It said, “The European Commission has informed Honeywell International Inc. and E.I. du Pont de Nemours and Company (DuPont) of its preliminary view that the refrigerant for use in car air conditioning systems (R-1234yf), may have limited its availability and technical development, in break of EU antitrust rules.” Continue reading

As soon as you are ready to stop using your air conditioning it is best if you turn the unit off. This will mean that your unit isn’t on and therefore doesn’t have any water flowing through it. New Qualifications Launched to Educate About Legionella

It has been announced that there have been some new qualifications released in order to help businesses prevent the legionnaire’s disease which stems from legionella bacteria.

Highfield Awarding Body for Compliance (HABC) have come up with the new qualifications and have partnered up with B & V water treatments in order to do so. The qualifications that they have put in place are for those who have air conditioning systems and an understanding of the bacteria and the disease, how to measure it and also how to stop it. HVAC Industry in America Budgets $5bn R&D Project

Stephen Yurek is the president and CEO at the Air Conditioning, Heating and Refrigeration Institute in America and he has said that the American HVAC sector is going to invest over $5 billion into research to develop refrigerants and machines over the next 10 years.

He said, “Close to $2 billion has been spent by the industry since 2009 researching energy-efficient equipment and the utilisation of low GWP-refrigerants and over the next 10 years, the HVACR industry will invest an additional $5 billion of research and development and capital expenditures to develop and commercialise low-GWP technologies.” Continue reading

Costco faced with fine after Clean Air Act Violations

Costco have been hit with a $335,000 fine and they will need to pay $2 million in remedial measures because they have not recorded R22 leaks over the last 3 years.

Costco are the second largest retailer in the US and they had previously promised to cut their emissions from refrigeration and they were planning on doing so by improving their units in more than half of their stores across the country. Continue reading

ECOPHIT technology can reduce energy consumption by 26%

There has been a study conducted in Singapore which shows that a new type of air conditioning system could reduce energy consumption by 26%. For countries where temperatures can be unbearable, this is great news as it means units that are usually on all day and night can now be replaced for a more efficient system.

On top of this, they found that when the back end system is optimised there is a possible reduction in energy consumption by 36%. The new technology is called Chilled Ceiling Technology and the study was carried out by the Energy Research Institute at Nanyang Technological University in Singapore. Continue reading
